Root Rot

Root Rot

Colossians 2:6-7: So then, just as you received Christ Jesus as Lord, continue to live your lives in him, rooted and built up in Him, strengthened in the faith as you were taught, and overflowing with thankfulness.

I was driving by a local Christian thrift store and their sign said: No Root – No Fruit

As I pondered on its truth on my drive, I thought about how the roots give the system of nourishment to a tree and without the roots, there cannot be any fruit. I also thought of the importance of the fact that a fruit tree needs the root system to be planted deeply in the ground. Sometimes a trees system starts dying off due to over-watering allowing some fungi to infect it. The tree that once flourished with fruit, starts to turn off-colored, and the fruit does not grow like it used to as the fungi seems to cover more and more of the tree. One of the only solutions to root rot is to prune the tree way back and treat the cause of the fungi so that it does not come back. Sometimes it takes a few seasons before that tree is large enough and healthy enough to have a harvest of fresh fruit on its branches once again. Job 14:7-9—At least there is hope for a tree: if it is cut down, it will sprout again, and its new shoots will not fail. Its roots may grow old in the ground and its stump die in the soil, yet at the scent of water it will bud and put fort shoots like a plant.

God compares those who trust in Him being planted by the nourishment of His Word the Bible: Jeremiah 17:7-8—“But blessed is the one who trusts in the Lord, whose confidence is in Him. They will be like a tree planted by the water that sends out its roots by the stream. It does not fear when heat comes; its leaves are always green. It has no worries in a year of drought and never fails to bear fruit.”

That is the kind of Christian I desire to be, firmly planted in Him, trusting Him to lead and guide my life and grow me up in His ways daily!!!
