But the Helper, the Holy Spirit…
John 14:26a

Jesus promised His disciples that He would send them the Holy Spirit who would be known as the helper. The Holy Spirit, our helper, comes alongside our life to bring us the calm reassurance that we need in our trials. The helper reminds us that all is well, that everything will work out according to God’s will and that we need to sit back and relax. This word helper is defined in the Greek as “one who comes to our aid”. Jesus knows that we would be in desperate need of help and this is why he sent us the Helper.
How does He help us? Here are are four ways in which He has come to help us.
1. He exhorts- by urging us to get right with God and encouraging us to stay on track.
2. He comforts us- by giving us peace of mind and relieve from discouragement.
3. He encourages- by giving us hope and confidence in Jesus.
4. He invites us- by asking us to participate in following Jesus and in serving Him.

Jesus knew that His disciples were going to need His Spirit in order to be able to carry on in the life of a disciple. We are told that we would receive power when the Holy Spirit comes upon us. This power is given to us so that we can be witnesses. He is then going to come alongside of us and give us His Spirit to help us follow after Him. How do you get the Spirit? All you have to do is ask, ask by faith and you will receive what you have asked for.
